Caliban's Costume < Miranda's Costume Ariel's Costume >
The most drastically shifted character interpretation is seen in Caliban. Originally, she created a scarred bodysuit and the magical seaweed kilt for him. However, in Denise Hicks’ interpretation, Caliban is more comedic, loveable character. Lynda Cameron-Bayer wanted to see these elements of his character reflected more accurately in his costume. After reimagining his costume, she came up with the idea that Caliban would wear a cloak that belonged to his mother, Sycorax. This coat is already full of magic, yet she wanted Caliban to add his own magic to it.
To demonstrate Caliban’s magical touch to the cloak, Lynda Cameron-Bayer decided to add little elements such a squirrel furs and pieces of seaweed. The idea of Caliban adding these to the cloak symbolizes his desire to gain ownership over not just the cloak, but also his underlying goal to conquer the island. The fur itself was made from vintage repurposed fur pieces.
The cloak had to be designed to be very lightweight, as Caliban is constantly running around the stage. Lynda Cameron-Bayer wanted to coat to feel airy and light. The only weight holding the coat down is the row of rodents hanging off.
