ONEC1TY unveiled their 3D-printed structure in July 2018 and is
considered to be the largest in the world. The original concept for
this 3D structure was presented to Branch Technology. To get around
using steel, they redesigned the structure with specialized software.
The structure is a geometric design made of carbon fiber, Acrylonitrile
Butadiene Styrene and coated with an ultraviolet protective metallic paint.
The structure weighs 3,200 pounds and can take on an inch of ice.
The director, Denice Hicks, talks about how they had to plan around
this structure as it is not traditional for a Shakespeare play. Their backstage
at Centennial Park was a home to the homeless throughout their plays. This changed
how Prospero was going to be completely different just because of the set design
and backstage. They decided to not have a backstage area because their plan was to
have the play on a football field in Franklin. The huge structure and colorful
poles that entrench the set was a challenge. The set designer told Hicks he
wanted to build the set around the structure and it ended up working out for them.
