The main theme of the set design was to highlight the relationship the characters had with the island. The different layers of the set represented other parts of the island. Prospero travels the island throughout the whole play. Although he remains strong and resilient in some scenes you can tell that the land is native. This was one of the purposes for creating a layered set. The design was all one piece but the different sections allowed the set to be expanded and seen as a whole island.
